Lama Anagarika Govinda (né Ernst Lothar Hoffman le 17 mai 1898; mort le 14 janvier 1985) il fut le fondateur l'ordre Pali du Bouddhisme tibétain du Arya Maitreya Mandala et un propagateur du Bouddhisme tibétain.

Il naquit à Waldheim en Allemagne, d'un père allemand et une mère bolivienne. Après avoir passé deux ans dans l'armée allemande pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, il fut réformé pour cause de Tuberculose. Il habita Capri en Italie de 1920 à 1928, où il découvrit le Bouddhisme. Parti au Sri Lanka il se fit moine bouddhiste de la tradition Theravada. En 1931, il se convertit au Bouddhisme tibétain et après la fondation de son ordre en 1933, il séjourna trois décennies à Almora en Inde du Nord. Allemand de naissance, Govinda fut interné par l'armée britannique pendant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. En 1947, il épousa la photographe Li Gotami avec qui il voyagea au Tibet, notamment au Royaume de Gugé. Dans les années 1960 il voyagea beaucoup pour donner des conférences sur le bouddhisme. Il s'établit pour finir dans le secteur de la Baie de San Francisco où il passa ses dernières années, et fut l'hôte quelque temps d'Alan Watts.
